LANGUAGE MATTERS. And not to protect the “snowflakes” ❄️ or to bolster the “language police” 🚔 It matters because it changes the way we see other people and the way we see ourselves. We can rewire and reprogram our brains 🧠 with the words we choose to dwell on, to say, and to listen to. Language matters because it reveals and informs narrative, which is the way we interpret and understand the world around us (including ourselves) and in turn guides our behavior and the way we react/respond to the behavior of others. What story are you telling yourself about those around you? What would happen if you allowed for some more curiosity, nuance, and even uncertainty? What if you allowed others and yourself to tell the story in a different way? Specifically in regards to children, what if we came to them believing they are willing, believing they simply want connection, believing the feelings their behaviors are communicating? What if we stopped asking our kids things like, “Why won’t you do what I ask?” (which implies they are fully able and willfully choosing not to) and started asking, “What do you need from me in this moment? How can I help?” (which implies willingness to cooperate but recognizes there is something in the way, a separate need going unmet)
